The result was that Lamhe turned out to be a flop at the box office. When Yash Chopra was looking for a heroine for Lamhe after casting Anil Kapoor, he wanted to cast Rekha in the film. Yash Chopra had thought of making Lamhe during the super hit Silsila, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha in the lead roles. He was making the film Chandni first and only after its huge success, he casted Sridevi in the film.
The failure of Lamhe had a deep impact on Yash Chopra. It is said that after its failure, Yash Chopra fell into a mild depression. It was the first time in his film career that he felt like this as he had huge expectations from this film.
Lamhe was produced by Yash Chopra under his production banner Yash Raj Films and shot in two phases in Rajasthan and London. The film received widespread critical acclaim, with Sridevi being singled out for her dual role as mother and daughter.
