Malayalam star Mammootty’s cult classics Valyettan and Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha received an updated remastered release after Mohanlal’s Devadoothan and Manichithrathazhu were similarly re-released and the 4K re-release was well received by the audience. Now, another Mammootty film joins the re-release bandwagon- the classic period film Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, directed by Hariharan.
The announcement of the re-release was made by the makers some time ago, but only now, with the release of the remastered teaser by the team at Matinee Now, the film’s return to the big screen has been confirmed.
Mammootty has released a greeting video on the occasion of the film’s release. The actor said, “The film is a northern hero story that has brought a lot to Malayalam cinema and to me personally. This film, which was released in 1989 and produced by Grihalakshmi Productions, written by the beloved MT Vasudevan Nair and directed by Hariharan, is now being re-released using new techniques."
Mammootty said in the video that PVG (PV Gangadharan) was the person who wanted to release Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha in 4K Atmos and they talked about it a lot. For some reason, it didn’t happen that day. Mammootty said that today his children are making that dream come true.
Mammootty explained that Grihalakshmi Productions has remastered the film in such a way that those who have already seen it can watch it again and first-time viewers can watch it with a new look and sound quality.
Penned by veteran novelist and screenwriter MT Vasudevan Nair, the film tells the story of the warriors of the Malabar region of Kerala as never seen before. It was directed by acclaimed director Hariharan. Mammootty, who played the lead character Chandu, won the National Award for Best Actor for his performance. The film also won the National Awards for Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. It also bagged 6 awards including the Best Popular Film award at the Kerala State Film Awards of 1989.
In an online poll conducted by IBN Live as part of the centenary celebrations of Indian cinema, Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha was listed third among the 100 greatest Indian films of all time.
