Kiran Rao Reveals Why She Rejected Aamir Khan's Audition For Laapataa Ladies: 'His Test Was Very...'
Kiran Rao said that had she cast in Aamir in Laapataa Ladies, it would've been hard to maintain the character's unpredictability due to the actor's stardom.

Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has finally been released in cinemas after much anticipation. The comedy-drama stars Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, Nitanshi Goel and Ravi Kishan in prominent roles. Earlier, Aamir had revealed that he had auditioned for Ravi’s role but got rejected by Kiran. In a recent interview, Kiran spoke about why she decided that Aamir was not the right choice for the film.

Speaking to the Hindustan Times, Kiran said, “I think he was very supportive of that decision and took it along with me. It was arrived at after a lot of thought. Because you see, Aamir will bring in the audience. For a small film like this, it’d make that huge difference at the box office. This film has been made for all the villages and small towns, for a wide audience, and Aamir would’ve helped greatly in that way.”

“Even though he found the right notes for this character and everything else, there’s a stardom that’s very hard to escape. The character he’s playing is quite grey, so the idea was that we didn’t want you to know what this character is going to end up doing. Keeping the unpredictability and the surprise of Manohar’s character would’ve been much harder had it been Aamir,” she said. “His test was very entertaining and great fun. In fact, someday, we should release it as a BTS,” Kiran added.

Laapataa Ladies was finally released in cinemas on Friday, March 1. The film has opened with good reviews. News18 Showsha gave the film 4 stars and our review read, “Laapataa Ladies is a film which should be celebrated by every gender. In the season of big screen larger-than-life entertainers, Rao’s film comes across as refreshing and turns out to be a clear winner.”

While Kiran Rao has directed the film, it has been produced by Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions. The film is presented by JioStudios and is based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami. The screenplay and dialogues are written by Sneha Desai and the additional dialogues have been penned by Divyanidhi Sharma.
