New Delhi: It is perhaps because of his charming screen presence, perfect expressions and confident body language that R Madhavan has over the years successfully carved a niche for himself in the Tamil and Hindi film industries. Today, as 'Maddy' turns a year older, let us take a trip down memory lane and revisit some of his finest performances.
Guru: Directed by Mani Ratnam, 'Guru' revolved around an ambitious young man who ends up owing a successful business. Playing a supporting role, Madhavan created quite a buzz amongst movie buffs, courtesy his sizzling chemistry with Vidya Balan. Interestingly, the movie was premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, helping 'Maddy' reach out to a global audience. Upon theatrical release, it emerged a runaway hit at the box office.
Tanu Weds Manu: Best remembered for its realistic yet fun-filled storyline, this Anand Rai-directed film was appreciated by the youth especially in the smaller cities. Boasting of some catchy music, 'Tanu Weds Manu' featured the unconventional pairing of Kangana Ranaut and Madhava. He underplayed his part quite wonderfully, giving the 'Queen' of Bollywood an opportunity to showcase her acting skills to the fullest.
Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein: Directed by Gautham Menon, this youthful romantic-comedy created quite a stir amongst the youth, thanks to its catchy music and relatable storyline. Essaying the role of spoilt brat, 'Maddy' delivered an effortless performance, receiving rave reviews. Interestingly, it was a remake of the popular Tamil film 'Minnale'. Just like 'Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein', the original too featured Madhavan in the lead.
Yavarum Nalam: Touted as a psychological-thriller, this Vikram Kumar-directed project was shot simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi. Its Hindi version was titled '13 B'. Revolving around the eerie events which take place after a family moves into a new apartment, the film managed to floor critics and audiences alike, thanks to its bone-chilling screenplay and realistic performances. Interestingly, both versions fared pretty well at the box office. The movie’s success went a long way in establishing Madhavan as a force to be reckoned with.
Anbe Sivam: Best remembered for the crackling onscreen rapport between Madhavan and Kamal Haasan, this enjoyable drama touched upon a host of serious issues such as communism and atheism. Upon release, it underperformed at the box office despite receiving tremendous critical acclaim. Interestingly, over the years, 'Anbe Sivam' has acquired a cult status of sorts and enjoys numerous re-runs on television.
Aaytha Ezhuthu: Giving strong proof of his growth as an actor, 'Maddy' delivered a standout performance in this political drama which also featured Suriya, Siddharth and Bharathiraja in lead important roles. A huge commercial success, the film received tremendious critical acclaim and helped Madhavan bag a Filmfare award. Interestingly, 'Aaytha Ezhuthu' was shot simultaneously in Hindi with a different cast. The Hindi version was titled 'Yuva'.
