Hansal Mehta is gearing up for the release of his latest thriller, ‘The Buckingham Murders’, starring Kareena Kapoor in a gripping lead role. After the trailer’s grand reveal, the internet was quick to draw comparisons between the film and Kate Winslet’s acclaimed miniseries ‘Mare of Easttown’. Naturally, netizens took to social media, with one user calling out the film as a “copy.” But Mehta was having none of it.
When an X user recently took a jab at Hansal Mehta’s upcoming film ‘The Buckingham Murders’, accusing it of being a knockoff of ‘Mare of Easttown’, the internet buzzed with the comparison. The user wrote, “Mare of Easttown… God please! Plz get something original…” But Mehta wasn’t one to let the criticism slide. He clapped back with a cool and collected response, saying, “Decide after you watch. Don’t jump to conclusions.” Looks like Mehta is confident his murder mystery will stand on its own!

At the trailer launch, Kareena Kapoor was also asked if her character was influenced by Kate Winslet’s performance in ‘Mare of Easttown’. Kapoor addressed the speculation, clarifying, “The script came to me a year before Mare of Easttown was released. Actors should draw inspiration from other actors; it is kind of a motivation to make you want to do better. I am a huge Kate Winslet fan and I watch her work closely.”
Hansal Mehta made it clear—his film is not an adaptation of the HBO miniseries, though the comparisons keep surfacing. For context, ‘Mare of Easttown’ is an American crime drama where Kate Winslet’s character investigates a small-town murder, and it concluded its seven-episode run in May 2021.
‘The Buckingham Murders’, predominantly shot in English with a sprinkle of Hindi, features Ranveer Brar in a significant role and is set to hit the big screens on September 13. With Kapoor leading the charge in her second film this year after ‘Crew’, audiences are eagerly waiting to see how this mystery unfolds.
