Esha Deol Reveals Her ‘Orthodox’ Punjabi Father Dharmendra Wanted Her To Get Married At 18
Esha Deol revealed that her father, Dharmendra, was initially against her pursuing a career in acting. Instead, he wanted her to settle down and get married at 18.

Esha Deol, the elder daughter of legendary Bollywood actor couple Dharmendra and Hema Malini, knew that she wanted to pursue a career in acting. Thus, following in her parents’ footsteps, she decided to make her debut in the Hindi film industry. But her journey wasn’t easy, as her father was strictly against it. Recently, the actress revealed how she eventually convinced her “orthodox” father to let her do films.

While speaking to Hauterrfly, Esha revealed that Dharmendra wanted her to get married when she had just turned 18. Sharing that her father was a bit orthodox, the actress said, “He didn’t want that I should enter the movies. He is a bit orthodox, rightfully so… He is a Punjabi father, and he wanted that we should get married, settle down at 18. That is his conditioning, he is coming from a place where all the women in his house were brought up that way. But my upbringing was very different.”

The Dhoom actress grew up with her mother, Hema Malini, and was deeply influenced by her career in movies. Hence, she always wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps and make a name for herself in the industry. The only problem was convincing her father. “I knew I wanted to be someone, but it took a while to convince him. It was not easy, but today is a different story,” added Esha. Meanwhile, Dharmendra’s two sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, from his first marriage with Prakash Kaur, had already established themselves in Bollywood before Esha’s debut in 2002.

In the same conversation, the No Entry actress talked about up her strict upbringing. “My (maternal) grandmother was very strict. We were not allowed to wear spaghettis and short skirts and go out. We were not allowed many late nights,” added Esha. Further, she revealed that she was going through a rebellious phase when she would lie to her folks and go out late at night. “There was a phase where I would lie to go out on late nights. I have done all of that. It’s not like I haven’t done that, and it used to be fun, too,” said the actress.

Esha rose to prominence after her electrifying performance in Dhoom Machale, the hit dance song from her 2004 film Dhoom. Following the massive success of Sanjay Gadhvi’s action thriller, she starred in several other films, such as Dus, LOC: Kargil, Yuva and No Entry, but struggled to make a lasting impact on the audience. After taking a break from the industry, Esha has returned to start a new inning in her career. She was most recently seen in Hunter: Tootega Nahi Todega alongside Suniel Shetty, Barkha Bisht, Rahul Dev and more.
