Many Bollywood actors and actresses have achieved fame and success even with short careers. One such actress was Priya Rajvansh. She acted in only seven films but remains popular 24 years after her death. Priya Rajvansh is still remembered for her roles in films like Heer Raanjha and Hanste Zakhm.
Priya Rajvansh, born Veera Sunder Singh in Shimla, was the daughter of Sunder Singh, who worked in the Forest Department. After her father received a UN assignment, Priya moved to London with him after her graduation. In London, she attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).
When Priya Rajvansh was 22, Bollywood saw her picture from London. Thakur Ranveer Singh, a filmmaker, introduced her to Chetan Anand, Dev Anand’s brother. They chose her for the movie Haqeeqat (1964), which became a huge success and is still known as one of India’s best war movies.
Priya Rajvansh and Chetan Anand fell in love, even though he was separated from his wife. Despite being younger, they began a relationship. From then on, Priya only worked in Chetan Anand’s films and was deeply involved in all aspects of filmmaking. The filmmaker never made a movie without her as the main character.
During her more than 20-year career, Priya Rajvansh starred in many popular movies like Heer Raanjha with Raaj Kumar, Hanste Zakhm, Hindustan Ki Kasam, Kudrat with Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini, and Saheb Bahadur with Dev Anand.
Priya Rajvansh was last seen in the movie Haathon Ki Lakeeren’ which came out in 1985. She stopped acting after this. Although she had a successful career in films, her personal life had difficulties, which sadly led to her tragic death.
Priya Rajvansh and Chetan Anand were together and lived in the same place. When he passed away in 1997, she got some of his property along with his sons from his earlier marriage.
Priya Rajvansh was murdered on March 27, 2000, at Chetan Anand’s bungalow in Ruia Park, Juhu, Mumbai. Chetan Anand’s sons Ketan Anand and Vivek Anand, along with their employees Mala Choudhary and Ashok Chinnaswamy, were accused of her murder. The police suspected that they were after her inheritance from Chetan Anand’s property.
Handwritten notes and a letter from Priya Rajvansh to Vijay Anand were shown in court as proof. In the letter, her concerns and fears were evident in the days leading up to her death in mysterious circumstances.
The four people accused were found guilty and given life sentences in July 2002. However, they were released on bail in November 2002. Priya Rajvansh’s murder case is still open, with no clear motive or perpetrators in custody.
