Only a few know, there have been three films which have been produced with the same name. One of the latest, starring Rajinikanth, came out in 2023 and was a huge hit. Jailer (1938)

Released in 1938, the first Jailer movie was billed as a melodrama, helmed by producer and director Sohrab Modi. Produced by Minerva Movietone, the lyrics were penned by Kamal Amrohi and Amir Haider, while the screenplay was penned by JK Nanda. Mir Saheb took charge of the film’s music direction. The movie starred Sohrab Modi, Leela Chitnis, Sadiq Ali, Eruch Tarapore, Abu Bakar, Baby Kamla, and Kusum Deshpande in the main roles. The film did pretty well at the box office, according to reports.

Jailer (1958)

In 1958, Jailer was remade with the same name. Sohrab Modi produced and directed it again, just like before. Minerva Movietone handled the production of the remake. Kamal Amrohi wrote the story and dialogues like earlier. But this time, the music was composed by Madan Mohan, while Rajendra Krishna wrote the lyrics.

Sohrab Modi played the lead role in the film Jailer. The film also starred notable actors like Kamini Kaushal, Geeta Bali, Abhi Bhattacharya, Daisy Irani, Nana Palsikar, Eruch Tarapore, and Pratima Devi.

Jailer (2023)

Rajinikanth starrer Jailer broke records at the box office. After the 1938 and 1958 versions, this film was a bigger hit than the initial releases. Rajinikanth’s action-packed film was directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures. Alongside Rajinikanth, Vinayakan, Ramya Krishnan, Vasanth Ravi, Tamannaah, Sunil, Mirna Menon, and Yogi Babu played supporting roles in the movie.

Released on August 10, 2023, the film became the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year. Additionally, it achieved the feat of becoming the second-fastest Tamil film to reach Rs. 600 crore in earnings. Jailer has even claimed the top spot as the number-one Tamil movie in both the UK and North America.
