Attribute my success to Punjabi film industry, it helped me bag a role in 'Udta Punjab': Diljit Dosanjh
As the budget for Punjabi films increase, and the quality gets better, it is obvious for the industry’s impact to become indelible both culturally and economically.

There is so much to chat about with actor Diljit Dosanjh, that one might feel that even a day isn’t enough. From his choice of roles to Kareena Kapoor as a co-star and the impact of Johnny Depp, there is a lot that Diljit wanted to discuss, analyze and review when he visited IBNLive office a few days back. And yes, the experience became just so special, thanks to his quirks, lively sense of humour and witty replies.

Popular with female fans across all age groups, Diljit doesn’t take too long to say “Saariyan kudiyaan mainu sohniyan lagdiyaan (I find all girls attractive)" when we asked him if he wanted to rope in any actress in particular if a Hindi remake of ‘Jatt & Juliet’ is ever considered. “It is just so difficult to decide one name. Since I don’t want to upset any actress – Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt – I suggest we start a series of ‘Jatt & Juliet’. Wouldn’t that leave everyone happy?" he adds.

With his film ‘Sardaarji’, Diljit not only promises to offer something new to his viewers, but also explores a genre – fantasy film - which is a rarity in Punjabi film industry. While Diljit plays a ghost buster, co-star Neeru Bajwa will be featured as a stunning female spirit.

But why the name Sardaarji, is there a hidden meaning in it? “It sounds just so good, the name ‘Sardaarji’, na? Bahut sukoon milta hai sun ne mein. You have to watch the film to understand the essence. I don’t do films to send out a message to anyone, they are made to entertain fans. I’m happy to be part of ‘Sardaarji’ as it explores the fantasy film genre, something we have seen only in Hollywood till now. Remember Johnny Depp in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’? The role remains special to me. If kids like posing with Johnny Depp's wax figure at Madame Tussauds, that’s all because of its impact. I just want to give Punjabi kids an opportunity to experience something similar," he says.

While Diljit raises a bar with every performance, and enjoys holding himself to a higher standard, he doesn’t like keeping any expectations from his films. “I don’t keep any expectations from my work and that’s exactly what I tell my fans and friends. I just want to entertain my fans with my roles."

As the budget for Punjabi films increase, and the quality gets better, it is obvious for the industry’s impact to become indelible both culturally and economically. “There is a huge room for expansion and growth when it comes to Punjabi films. Think of this – I got a break in Bollywood because of my work in Punjabi showbiz industry. Those who follow the trends in Punjabi showbiz industry would also know that the producers are never repeated here. Ab toh koshish hi yeh hai ki zyaada cinema halls mei humari films release karein," he says, adding, “Bagging a National Award for ‘Punjab 1984’ was a huge honour. Jab humne ‘Punjab 1984’ banana shuru kiya thaa toh aisa laga ki kahin yeh ban na ho jaye. Producers were also a bit skeptical. But the impact of Punjabi films can be gauged by the fact that Bollywood wanted a regional artiste like me for their project."
