DC Extended Universe’s recently released Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, is on a record breaking spree. The film has earned more than Rs 6500 crore worldwide and has become DC’s highest grossing film ever.
"With an estimated $30.7 million, WB and DC Comics' Aquaman is the #1 film at the domestic weekend box office for the third straight weekend," reports Box Office Mojo.
Warner Bros released the figures on January 6 stating that Aquaman has earned an additional $30.7 million in North America, taking its US box office collection to approximately $260 million. Talking of India, the film made close to Rs 50 crore in its first week. James Wan directorial continues its winning streak in the fourth week with a global tally surpassing $940 million.
Box Office Mojo reports that Aquaman's international sum is the largest among DC Comic adaptations surpassing The Dark Knight Rises ($636.8m) while the worldwide total ranks third behind The Dark Knight Rises ($1.084 billion) and The Dark Knight ($1 billion).
Among the top 10 films at the worldwide box office in 2018, Aquaman gained the seventh spot by collecting a total amount of $748.8 until the last week of December. DCEU's origin story of the half-human half-Atlantean Aquaman revived the franchise's space in the market. The film was a thrust for Warner Bros. as the production house didn't see much success with its recent superhero movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Justice League.
In the meantime, director James Wan called the exclusion of his film, "Aquaman" from visual effects Oscars shortlist a "f**king disgrace".
As per The Wrap, Wan expressed his disapproval through a comment on an old Facebook post.
Kelvin McIlwain, who worked as the visual effects supervisor on the Jason Momoa-fronted DC movie, had congratulated the director for his work on a post on social media a while ago.
Wan wrote, "Replying to McIlwain, you and your department are the unsung heroes of this film. The fact that your VFX peers in the Academy aren't recognizing or appreciating what we/you've all contributed to the film and cinema is a f****ing disgrace".
