Though it earned over Rs 150 crore when it released in India early this year, Akshay Kumar’s Pad Man has failed to impress the Chinese audience, collecting only Rs 37 crore in three days.
Announcing the film’s dismal performance in China, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on Monday, “#PadMan misses the mark in #China... The trending was weak, while the jump in biz was clearly lacking... Fri $ 1.47 mn Sat $ 2.04 mn Sun $ 1.65 mn Total: $ 5.22 mn [₹ 37.49 cr]."

The social drama’s poor performance comes at a time when Indian films are being celebrated in China, some of them earning even two-three times more than their total domestic collection. Over the years, Aamir Khan has established himself as a superstar in China, with his several films, including Dangal, PK and Secret Superstar doing phenomenally well there.
Many other films, including Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Irrfan Khan’s Hindi Medium and most recently Rani Mukerji’s Hichki—which has grossed over Rs 150 crore there—have enjoyed a dream run at the Chinese box office. Interestingly, Akshay’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha had earned about Rs 100 crore in China.
An R Balki directorial, Pad Man is based on the life of social entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganantham, who revolutionised menstrual hygiene in South India by making low-cost sanitary napkins available to rural women.
Bankrolled by Akshay’s wife, actor-turned-author Twinkle Khanna, the film also stars actors Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte in pivotal roles.
