Famous for roles in films like Raja Rani and 7aum Arivu, actress Dhanya Balakrishna has responded to a recent issue around an old Facebook post that was alleged to have been made by her. The actress purportedly described Tamilians in the post as people who are always pleading with Karnataka for necessities like electricity and water.
Ahead of the premiere of Lal Salaam, in which she plays an important role, the 12-year-old post has reappeared online. Audiences are calling for a boycott of the film due to her insensitive and disparaging comments towards Tamilians. The actress has since released a statement in which she asserts that the post was created by an unidentified someone seeking to damage her reputation.
Dhanya Balakrishna went on to say that there wasn’t enough proof to support her claim that she was innocent and that was the reason for her being silent about the matter for so long. “Unfortunately, even though I did not say anything, my name is associated with it. I thus sincerely apologise to the Tamil people. I’m sorry that this occurred and that Tamil people’s sentiments were hurt. I also regret that this issue has caused hurt to Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rajinikanth, and their fans,” she continued. In the hopes that you would all accept it, I am apologising to you and declaring my innocence in my work because I don’t have enough evidence to support my claim of innocence.”

The entire fiasco had taken place in 2012 during the IPL tournament when Chennai Super Kings qualified for the playoffs. A post made from Dhanya Balakrishna’s Facebook page said that Tamils from Chennai beg Bengaluru for energy and water, and also that Chennai residents pollute the capital of Karnataka. At the time, there was a significant backlash and Dhanya later declared she was leaving Tamil cinema. She did, nevertheless, keep acting in Tamil TV shows and films.
