Fans continue to hail Aamir Khan’s Sarfarosh as one of his standout films. The actor graced a special screening of this action-packed thriller in Mumbai, joined by co-stars Sonali Bendre and Naseeruddin Shah. At the gathering, Aamir delved into the distinctiveness of his portrayal as a police officer, highlighting how it diverged from the typical cop roles seen in movies, while also revealing a lingering regret associated with the role.
Aamir went on to reveal a lingering regret about his role, expressing, “I was really disturbed about one thing while shooting the film. I was in continuity with a couple of films that time. Toh main apne baal chote nahi kar paaya jitna mujhe chota karna tha. Toh woh baat mujhe itni disturb karti thi. Aaj bhi jab main apni film dekhta hu toh mujhe lagta hai ki, ‘Yaar, ye scenes dobara nahi kar sakte?’ (I was not able to cut my hair short and this bit disturbed me a lot. Even today when I watch the film, I go, ‘Can’t we redo these scenes?) Luckily I was supposed to be in plain clothes so yeah we tried to pull it off.”” Upon hearing John’s observation about no such roles in the crime department, Aamir humorously remarked that he wished he had been informed about this earlier.
In the midst of the conversation, Aamir remarked, “Actually this might be true for mainstream cinema. Like the film made by Govind ji [Nihalani], Ardha Satya. That was a great cop film. But by and large in mainstream cinema we do no usually get to see a kind of film like Sarfarosh.”
Aamir also highlighted the distinctiveness of his character compared to industry norms, emphasizing the film’s authenticity. Police officers have expressed admiration for the realism and depth of the film, which underscores the strength of the script and John [Matthew Matthan] as a director in balancing realism with excitement and thrill, “That is one of the strengths of the film. Whenever I meet a police constable they always say how they love this film. How real it feels. That’s the strength of the script and John [Matthew Matthan] as a director. He kept it as real as possible and still making it exciting and thrilling.”
Sarfarosh centered on the struggle of an Indian police officer against cross-border terrorism, earning accolades for Aamir’s depiction of Ajay Singh Rathod in opposition to the antagonist Gulfam Hassan, portrayed by Naseeruddin Shah. The movie was honored with the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
