Maybe you don’t like the taste or how your breath smells after eating, but what if you chose to cut off onions from your diet for a month? Doctors said that if onion is not included in the diet for a month, which has the power to disturb the eyes, various problems will occur.
Senior dietician Swati from Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals explained the potential consequences and why onions might be more friend than foe.
Onions are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that play an important role in keeping your body healthy. It is also a great source of vitamin C, B6, and folate, all of which boost the immune system and support cell growth and a healthy metabolism. These are loaded with powerful antioxidants that boast anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
Abstaining from onions for a month does not result in major changes in the body. But, some subtle changes will certainly occur. As onions are a good source of dietary fibre crucial for a healthy digestive system, avoiding them can lead to constipation and cause other digestive problems.
Eliminating onions could lead to deficiencies in vitamins C, B6 and folate, along with minerals like manganese and potassium, which weaken the immune system. Swati said that it also increased fatigue, and there would be negative effects on the formation of red blood cells and blood clotting.
It contains anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties like allicin and quercetin, which help reduce oxidative stress and decrease the risk of chronic diseases.
“For most people, the benefits of including onions outweigh any drawbacks,” says Dr Swati. “If you have concerns about including them in your diet due to digestive issues, consult a registered dietician to explore alternative options that provide similar nutrients.”
