In Christianity, Holy Tuesday is observed on the Tuesday prior to Easter Sunday of the sacred week every year. Also known as Fig Tuesday, it commemorates the day Jesus returned to Jerusalem from Bethany, passing a barren fit tree. It usually falls around the end of March and beginning of the April month.

The week celebrates various events in the life of Jesus Christ, including his prediction of his own death. Many followers also choose to fast or engage in acts of charity and service as a way of reflecting on the meaning of Holy Tuesday and preparing themselves for the upcoming celebration of Easter. This year Holy Tuesday falls on March 26.

Holy Tuesday: History And Significance

Holy week is the most sacred week for all the Christians around the globe. Catholics and Protestants observe the week with great devotion to honour the journey of Jesus. On this day, some churches hold special services or prayer vigils while others incorporate reading or hymns into their regular worship services.

Upon his return to Jerusalem, Jesus cursed a barren fig tree for never bearing fruit again and taught his disciples that with faith they will have the power to bless or curse the world around them. That’s the reason why this day is also known as Fig Tuesday.

Holy Tuesday, in some Christian traditions, has also been related to the parable of the Ten Virgins and the end of the world.

Meanwhile, the Holy Week, also known as the passion week, is a period of eight days, starting with Palm Sunday, the day Jesus entered Jerusalem preceded through the Last supper and his crucifixion. The weekends with Easter Sunday marking Jesus’ restoration to life.
