In his upcoming home production Bagha Jatin, Bengali actor Dev, who portrays the titular character, undergoes a dramatic transformation, adopting a rugged look with tangled hair and a long beard. The look was revealed in a fresh character poster for the film, which has been directed by Arun Roy.
This new look, put together by makeup artist Somnath Kundu, pays homage to the disguises worn by freedom fighters to escape the scrutiny of British authorities in the pre-Independence era. Bagha Jatin is centred on the life of Jatindranath Mukherjee, a prominent figure in India’s struggle for independence, features a cast that includes National Award-winning actress Sudipta Chakraborty, Samiul Alam and Sreeja Dutta. The film is scheduled for release in theaters during Durga Puja, on October 19.
Speaking exclusively to News18, Dev said, “I wanted to justify the character of Bagha Jatin, who, in order to evade capture by the British and keep the fight alive, used to assume multiple disguises. I aimed to do something completely contrasting to my actual character in the film. I was overjoyed and excited when this look was presented to me. I believe that what we set out to achieve was not only met but exceeded, and credit goes to the makeup artists, costume designer, my Director of Photography, my directorial team, and everyone involved in researching this appearance. I am really satisfied that I could pull off this look for the film.”
The film will depict the remarkable story of Jatindranath’s fearless resolve, unwavering determination and boundless love for his nation. Jatindranath Mukherjee earned the moniker ‘Bagha Jatin’ due to his courageous encounter with a tiger, where he fought the beast barehanded.
The actor was last seen in Byomkesh O Durgo Rohosyo, which he also co-produced. He played the titular character of the iconic Bengali sleuth, Byomkesh Bakshi, in the film.
