Bengal Polls: Left-Cong-ISF Alliance Announces 60 Names for Seats, Nandigram Selection Under Wraps
The Left Front also announced the candidates for the seats allotted to it.

The ‘Sanjukta Morcha’ of the Left Front, Congress and Indian Secular Front (ISF) has yet to finalise candidates for some seats including prestigious Nandigram in East Midnapore on Friday.

While announcing names of 60 candidates (Congress, Left Front and ISF combined) for phase-1 (March 27) and Phase-2 (April 1), Left Front Chairman Biman Bose on Friday, said, “Nandigram became a heavyweight centre that is why we have kept that seat vacant as of now. The Sanjukta Morcha has not yet come to a conclusion over several seats. Soon we will announce the name of a suitable candidate for Nandigram and other assembly seats.”

“The Sanjukta Kishan Morcha has decided to hold a series of protest rallies against Centre’s anti-farmers and anti-PSUs policy on March 12 and 15 respectively. We have decided to support them,” he said.

There was speculation that Abbas Siddiqui – one of the strong Muslim cleric in Bengal and founder of Indian Secular Front (ISF) – is likely to field their candidate against Trinamool Congress chief and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from Nandigram in East Midnapore in the upcoming 2021 Assembly polls.

Nandigram is one of the crucial seats for Mamata because she came to power in 2011 riding the waves of anti-land acquisition movements in Nandigram and Singur. And this is the reason BJP and the Congress-Left Front-ISF alliance is trying to corner Mamata from Nandigram – with a strong anti-incumbency message.

While BJP is yet to finalise their candidate against Mamata in Nandigram, the ‘Sanjukta Morcha’ too have decided to review the ground situation before announcing the name of the candidate.

Recently, speaking to the News18.com, Abbas Siddiqui brother Naushad Siddiqui, the Chairman of ISF, had said, “Yes, talks are going on between us and the Left-Congress alliance to field ISF candidate against Mamata Banerjee from prestigious Nandigram seat.”

The ‘Sanjukta Morcha’ sprung a surprise after announcing the name of controversial but powerful CPI (M) leader and former cabinet minister of West Bengal, Susanta Ghosh.

In September 2020, Susanta Ghosh was suspended by the party for three years on disciplinary grounds. However Biman Bose on Friday announced that Susanta Ghosh will contest from Salboni seat in West Midnapore.

Despite not being in power – he is known as one of the powerful CPI(M) leaders in Garbeta in West Midnapur. From 1987 to 2016 – he was the MLA and later became the cabinet minister in West Bengal during Left Front government under the Chief Ministership of Buddhadeb Bhattacharya

In August 2011, Ghosh was arrested in connection with the murder of seven TMC supporters, and spent six months in jail. Police, discovered seven skeletons after they dug up an area near Ghosh’s ancestral house in Benachpara in Garbeta in 2002.
