Srinagar: Protests erupted in Srinagar on Tuesday after Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Muhammad Yasin Malik's cousin was found dead under mysterious circumstances.
The body of Shabir Ahmad Sheikh, an autorickshaw driver, was found in Bemina locality Tuesday morning.
"He had been strangled to death," a local resident said.
Once the news of Shabir's death spread in Maisuma locality where he lived, angry youth forced the closure of markets and raised slogans while marching towards the adjacent city centre Lal Chowk.
Police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel tried to stop the marchers, but did not use any force.
The protesters also forced the closure of the main Lal Chowk market, resulting in traffic jams and chaos in the area.
The body was later taken to the Dal Gate burial ground by scores of mourners. Traffic remained off the roads in the uptown areas of the city.
