Chhatarpur: In the second act of sati in Madhya Pradesh in a month, a 95-year-old woman on Wednesday jumped into the pyre of her husband at Baniyani village near Chhatarpur, official sources said.

"We have received information about 95-year-old Kuria, wife of Siaram Rajput, commiting suicide this evening", Chhatarpur District Colletector Ajatshatru Srivastava told PTI over phone.

Asked whether it was an act of sati, he said the information received from the village said it was "but we can only confirm after we verify it".

Srivastav said he, along with Superintendent of Police Kanchan Shekhar, was on way to the village, around 250km from Bhopal.

Villagers claimed Kuria had announced her intention to commit sati in the event of death of her husband who had been ailing for a long some.

They said Kuria committed the act before anybody could stop her. Police was informed after the incident.

No case has yet been registered in connection with the incident, a senior police official said adding action would be taken if any one was found guilty of driving her to commit sati.

Janak Rani, 45, had jumped into the funeral pyre of her husband at Tulsipara village of Sagar district on August 21.
