This time the anger of the people climaxed to a level that a rapist was lynched in full view of the public. And the police remained a mute spectator. Perhaps they did not want to stir the hornet's nest by unseathing the shimmering anger of the people in the aftermath of Nithari serial killings. They preferred to go slow and the consequences were shoking. The rapist a 45 year old man of the same locality died in Ghaziabad city hospital.

This despite the fact that the Nithari police post is barely hundred meters away from where the minor was raped in broad daylight. Subsequently the accused Arjun Singh was hounded and lynched.

As the senior police officials got the inkling of media presence in the area, the accused was dragged away from the crowd. But by that time he was almost half dead. Even as the man shifted to Ghaziabad district hospital in a critical condition, residents of Nithari kept hounding the man in every nursing home and hospitals in the area.

As cameraman and reporters jostled to capture the action of the day live the crowd built up at Nithari Police chowki. It was action replay in manyways. Senior police officials rushed to the spot and tried to assuage the feelings of the slogannering residents of the area. The crowd built and the railings by the road were uprooted, the traffic island was turned uspide down and the entire traffic was blocked. Private vehicles that dared to defy the orders of the residents were attacked and were forced to take a U turn. The drama lasted for over 2 hours, and all attempts by the senior officials to calm down the crowd went unheeded.

All the while the agitating residents demanded that the accused should be handed over to them. There were apparent signs of a complete loss of faith in the judicial and the administrative system of the area.

Muninder Singh Pandher and his man Friday Surinder Kohli were targeted twice in full presence of the police. Once in Ghaziabad court where Muninder could no longer take the assault and fainted and previously while being produced in Noida court.

Even his house was attacked and the police remained a helpless spectator against the ire of the common man.

The police remained at the receiving end of things as people made a mockery of the law and order. The matter subsided only when the news of the death of the rapist spread in the area. As the crowd dessipated, the police was quick to lodge an FIR against unknown persons.

That seems to be a wake up call for the police. If the common man takes to punishing the accused on their own, it is the system which is to be blamed. Instances of such violent public lawlessness have been found in Patna, Nagpur and other places.
