Vijender eyes World Boxing gold and a place in history
Vijender Singh is the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal.

New Delhi: Vijender Singh faces Uzbek Atoev Abbos in the semi-final bout of the 75 kg in World Boxing Championship in Milan on Friday and will be aiming for a place in the final to take a shot at a historic gold medal.

Vijender is the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal and now also has India's first ever world championship medal wrapped up.

The top seed in the 75 kg weight category has once again been India's saving grace and the last man standing after the initial rounds.

"All of you just need to pray and I will take care of the ring. The result will be before you. I will do better that I have done before," Vijender had said before leaving for Milan.

Vijender has had it relatively easy at the World Championships because of a superb temperament and solid defence. He has trailed opponents but then stunned them by making them dance to his tune.

"All boxers at World Championship are of the same level. It is also about mental strength and not only physical strength. One who uses his mental strength wins the bout," said Vijender after winning his quarter-final match.

His Olympic run at Bejing came to an end in the semis but this time Vijender wants to break one more barrier and reach the final.

But standing in his way is Abbos, the gold medallist at the last world championships in the 81 kg category.

Abbos has since then moved down a weight division and lost to Vijender recently at the Asian Championships.

"Boxing is like an intoxicant. I hope to do well against Abbos and win," said the Indian boxer.

The dice is loaded in his favour and India is hoping that Vijender breaks another barrier.
