As Vijayakant arrives in the Central region on August 13 to strengthen the DMDK and rejuvenate the morale of the party functionaries, the thought will weigh on him that his party finished behind the MDMK in the local body elections.
Vijaykanth will take a whirlwind tour in the districts of Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchy and Karur and distribute welfare assistance to the people, besides attending public meetings from August 13.
Unlike the western and northern region of Tamil Nadu, where the DMDK was able to emerge as the third alternative in the local body elections, his party was pushed to the fourth spot in the Central region by the MDMK, which has a good presence here.
Besides, MDMK leader Vaiko has planned to focus in this region and the party’s State conference will be held at Karur, where the party won its lone municipality seat. It also polled about ten per cent votes in the Tiruchy Corporation elections and occupied the third spot in the most prestigious city in the delta region, apart from an overall good performance at Perambalur district.
Vijayakant’s party, which faced its first Assembly elections in 2006, polled ten per cent votes in the 2009 Parliament polls which it contested alone and retained the same vote share during the local body polls which again it contested on its own. It emerged as the third alternative in Tamil Nadu politics in the northern and western region. However, it faced a stiff contest from the MDMK in the Southern and Central region of Tamil Nadu.
The MDMK has a uniform but thin base throughout the State and the party was facing hurdles during seat allocation, due to lack of concentrated vote bank at any part of the State.
The party continues to be very weak in Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri ever since its inception. It had a good base in the western districts of Erode, Tirupur and Coimbatore which had dipped after the entry of the DMDK.
