Kolkata: Two suspected Maoists were arrested on Monday after they were seen lingering furtively around West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence on Harish Chatterjee Street, Kalighat in South Kolkata.
The policemen, guarding the CM's residence, confronted the duo, searched them, and found arms in their possession. They were identified as Sundari Singh Sardar and Sujat Singura.
When questioned, they revealed that they were the residents of Baghmundi in Purulia district.
"Baghmundi was once a Maoist-affected area, and they could be Maoist sympathisers. They are claiming that they are Maoists and came to surrender before the CM," a senior police officer told News18, adding they were taken to Lalbazaar police headquarters for interrogation. "We are verifying their claims."
The police officer also said that police were trying to find why they were wandering around the CM's residence with illegal weapons. "We have also alerted the local police in Baghmundi to inquire about their antecedents. If required, we will send a team of officers to Purulia for a thorough investigation,” he added.
Sources said, Kolkata Commissioner of Police, Rajeev Kumar, is personally monitoring the case.
In 2008, Mamata had received a threat call. A case was then registered at Kaligaht police station. Later, the case was transferred to state CID, and the matter is still under investigation.
In 2016, Mamata, who is covered under Z+ Security category, got a life threat from the terrorist group, Jaish-e-Mohammad. In a letter, an alleged JeM terrorist demanded Rs 50 crore from her government, threatening to kill her, and blow up Howrah Railway station, otherwise.
