MAHABOOBNAGAR: Two more workers succumbing to burns at a private hospital in Hyderabad in the wee hours on Saturday took the death toll to four due to the fire on Friday at a chemical factory at Polepalli SEZ near Jadcherla in the district.Police fear the death toll could rise as they are yet to ascertain the exact number of labourers who were trapped in the flames.The four victims were identified as Anil Kumar and Sandeep from Odisha, Robert Charles of Shamshabad and Sekhar Reddy of Shadnagar. While Anil Kumar died at the accident site, the others succumbed to their injuries at a private hospital in Hyderabad. After providing first aid at Mahaboobnagar, all the injured were shifted to the private hospital as they suffered more than 60 per cent burns.Two others are battling for life at the hospital. The mishap occurred when nearly 20 labourers were renovating a chemical manufacturing unit in the SEZ. The unit had been closed for more than two years and was recently bought by a cosmetics manufacturing company.The labourers were cutting and joining some equipment as part of renovation when sparks from the gas welding machine fell on chemical remains spilled across the factory.The containers kept at the site exploded and resulted in the inferno. However, police are yet to ascertain the exact reasons for the mishap. Meanwhile the state government has promised all necessary help to the victims and the injured. On the other hand, the contractor who hired the workers is still absconding.
