Colombo: Heavy monsoon showers disrupted the limited-overs tri-series, washing out Monday's opening match between Sri Lanka and South Africa.
Match referee Chris Broad said the tri-series opener will now be played on Tuesday, the reserve day, and he voiced concern that the whole tournament may be disrupted because rain is forecast for the next three days.
Broad called off Monday's play after heavy showers lashed Colombo's Premadasa Stadium in the afternoon, interrupting the ground staff's work to dry the already damp outfield after five days of rain.
Umpires Billy Bowden and Asoka de Silva were preparing to inspect the ground for the second time when heavy torrential rain forced the ground staff to cover the pitch again.
Broad said the heavily overcast skies and the damp ground conditions were enough to convince him to cancel play for the day.
The teams did not even bother to come to the ground after morning showers left the outfield soaked.
The tri-series, which also features India, is set to run until August 29.
Indian team and South African team management met former Sri Lanka skipper Duleep Mendis after the blast and it was decided that the tour will go on.
Sri Lanka cricket board has promised that they will provide adequate security to the team.
