Apart from that call, the helplines received over 50 phone calls from Northeasterners seeking information on trains available to the Northeast.Police sources said DGP Ramanujam made a call to the helpline, which was set up on Friday, around 8.45 pm and inquired about the next train to reach Assam as one of his tenants wanted to leave. The police personnel- special sub-inspector Balakrishnan and head constable Ramani from the Central Crime Branch — on the helpline in return assured the caller that the police would provide protection and that his tenant need not fear and leave the city. But the DGP, who spoke in Tamil, insisted that he be helped with the time for the next train to Assam. But the police assured and asked the caller to give them their residential address so that they could send policemen for protection.“I first spoke in Hindi and when he began to talk in Tamil, I replied in Tamil and said Chennai is safe. I even gave numbers of Assam Association in Chennai after he said that the tenant knew only Assamese,” said Balakrishnan, SSI. Convinced with the approach by the police personnel, the DGP called the city police commissioner JK Tripathy and inquired about the personnel manning the helpline, police sources said. On his insistence, the CoP rewarded them with `1,000 each.“I was on my way home after duty when I got a call from the commissioner’s office to come back and meet the commissioner. I didn’t know that it was the DGP who called.
