From launching their swimwear label three years ago, to showcasing their creations at the Lakme Fashion Week, designer duo Shivan and Narresh have come a long way — this year they will introduce their new Spring Summer 2012 collection, titled Mosaic, at the SAF show in Miami, making them the first Indian designers to participate in the event, which begins on July 16. “Our collection has two lines — a pret line and a handcrafted line, which has been introduced for the first time in our swimwear collection,” explains Narresh Kukreja, adding, “India has always been known for its handcrafted culture. Since we are representing India in this show, we decided to implement the techniques that are unique to our country in our collection — this includes surface techniques, drapes and embellishments, among others.”And that’s not all. The fabrics that have been used in this collection aren’t just uber chic, they are also technologically advanced, making them resistant to chlorine and UV rays. “We wanted to give a product that is not only fashionable but also performance oriented,” reveals Narresh, who believes that the duo is working towards opening a swimwear market in India. After their label was launched, the duo was approached by various Indian women, who expressed their desire to wear stylish swimwear, but were not body confident for the same. Also, the variety available in India has been minimal. This is when they decided to make these women their inspiration and work towards opening up a whole new horizon in the country. “Swimwear is one market that has been completely untouched by Indians. After some research we realised that the reason was not because women don’t want to wear stylish swimwear and lingerie, but because they are body conscious,” says the designer, adding, “Women in their 30s and 40s face various body related problems and we are here to provide them with a product that they can dawn without any inhibitions.” The designers are honoured to represent the only Indian swimwear brand and want to take it places.
