Kochi: Kochi is on high alert following intelligence inputs from central agencies that terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba may strike in the city.
Union Home Secretary GK Pillai reportedly spoke to Kochi Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham on Friday and informed him about the terror threat.
"Based on intelligence inputs we have issued an alert," Pillai said.
Coastal surveillance in Kerala has been enhanced even though the local police has been claiming that there has been no specific threat to any location.
Police officials say that it is only a routine alert but security has been stepped up at important locations like the Jewish Syangogue at Mattancherry and St Francis Church at Fort Kochi.
Security at Nedumbassery International Airport has also been increased.
The Central Government on Monday had sounded a terror alert for Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore following revelations by arrested Indian Mujahideen operative Salman.
Meanwhile, terror alert has been sounded at the Somnath Temple in Gujarat as well. Security has been tightened in and around the temple premises following intelligence reports of the temple being on the radar of terror groups.
Gujarat Home Department has increased the security personnel deployed at the temple from 90 to 165.
