CHENNAI: The Managing Director of TN Small Industries Corporation (TANSI) was directed to appear before the First Bench of the Madras High Court on the next date of hearing and file his affidavit on supplying furniture of very poor quality to courts, on Tuesday.
Originally, while passing interim orders on a suo motu taken up writ petition, the Bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam had accused the previous government of neglecting the judiciary by not providing necessary infrastructural facilities. At one point, it had observed that the government was spending crores of rupees for distribution of colour TVs free of cost. It passed an order on April 18 last to provide necessary infrastrcutural facilities to all the lower courts in the city, particularly the GT court. Accordingly, TANSI supplied the furniture and other items. The bench wondered how the furniture was below standard and showed signs of breakage within a couple of months. Ordering the inclusion of the TANSI MD as a party to the case, the bench directed him to appear on July 22 with an affidavit.

Before parting with the case, the bench also requested the Advocate-General A Navaneethakrishnan to seek instructions from the government as to why the land adjacent to the High Court, which had been earmarked for the Pondicherry Block at the Metropolitan Bus Terminus, be not allotted to the High Court for accommodating all the special courts like consumer courts, labour courts and tribunals. If it were done, the congestion on the High Court premises would be reduced to a great extent and the litigant public would also be benefited, the bench added.
