New Delhi: Aiming at faster delivery of passports, the government said police verification will take place after the travel document is issued, provided certain identity documents are submitted at the time of filing application.

The External Affairs Ministry came up with a way to fast track an application for a fresh passport. A person can obtain their fresh passports by submitting 3 documents, namely copies of Aadhaar Card, Electoral photo identity card and a PAN card.

A fresh passport can be granted in a week after submitting the documents. An applicant has to declare that he /she has no criminal record and police verification of such applications would be conducted after the passport is issued. No extra charge will be levied for this service. Earlier, all these provisions were made available only to Tatkal passport applicants.

Until now, the process would take a month, with the police verification taking up most of the time. Police verification of such applications will be conducted after the passport is issued. There will be no extra charge for the service, a statement issued by the ministry said. The process is subject to online validation of the Aadhaar number while processing and an approval from the granting officer.
