Baghdad: A suicide car bomber exploded a vehicle among a crowd of day labourers in central Baghdad on Tuesday, killing 40 people and wounding 35, the Interior Ministry said.
Iraqi police said 100 people were wounded.
The labourers had gathered in Tayran Square to wait for work. Gunfire sounded immediately after the blast and thick black smoke could be seen rising from the site, a Reuters witness said.
The Interior Ministry earlier said the bomber had detonated an explosives vest.
