A drive around the city throws up quaint old houses and structures from years gone by. Students from various schools were given an opportunity to study the heritage of these buildings on the occasion of Madras Week.
The contest encouraged city school students to explore the history of Chennai’s houses and their heritage and present the subject in multimedia form. Organised by the Mylapore Times, each school was allowed one team of three members each, and each were required to make a presentation.
Exquisite facades and peeling plaster on the walls added charm to the various buildings. Students had taken several pictures to highlight the buildings; many shots were of excellent quality.
Rohit, a student of class nine, said that the experience was enriching. “I’ve lived here all my life and I never realised that we had so much heritage.
I want to be an architect some day, so it was a wonderful competition to participate in,” he says.
The event was held at the Shastri Hall in Luz, and was sponsored by the South Indian National Association and the Ranade Library Luz.
