BHUBANESWAR: The College of Engineering and Technology (CET) here was closed sine die on Friday after students took to agitation over death of fourth year Mechanical Engineering student __ Anil Jaisingh. Jaisingh had allegedly jumped to death from an under-construction apartment under Khandagiri Police limits on Thursday. The agitating students alleged that the student took the extreme step after he was reportedly harassed by some faculty members during the semester examination. Jaisingh was reportedly told that he could not crack the examination at all. Jaisingh had apparently cleared a Services Selection Board interview, but his fate was hanging in balance due to one back paper which he had to clear. The third and fourth year students of CET were enraged over the fact that despite knowing about his death, the college authorities did not claim his body nor has any faculty member visited his family yet. The students gathered on the campus and demanded suspension of the faculty members who they claimed were responsible for Jaisingh’s death. They also demanded that the money collected for the annual tech fest of the college amounting to ` 22 lakh be given to the deceased’s mother. He was the only child of the family and had lost his father who was serving in the Army. As the agitating students continued their sit-in till 5 pm, the authorities called in police. Later, the CET management closed the institute sine die and asked the students to vacate the campus. Three platoons of police have been deployed to prevent any untoward incident. The students have, however, decided to take up the matter with Governor MC Bhandare. They have also threatened to lodge an FIR against the faculty members who allegedly harassed Jaisingh.
