Stipend for veterinary students hiked

To benefit students of veterinary science in the state, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday announced a hike in the monthly stipend during their internship. The undergraduates will now receive a stipend of `7,000 and post graduate students an amount of Rs 10,000. He also sanctioned `3 crore for the development of hostel and other facilities at the NTR College of Veterinary Science in Gannavaram of Krishna district.

Speaking at the programme organised for the veterinary science students and beneficiaries of Pashu Kranthi Pathakam here on Tuesday, Kiran said Rs 50 lakh would be soon released for the completion of the veterinary super speciality hospital in Vijayawada.

Kiran, on a three-day Indiramma Baata tour in Krishna district, said, “There is a lot of opportunity for development of dairy, poultry, horticulture and fisheries in the state.  The government will soon double the budgetary allocations for animal husbandry, fisheries and horticulture departments.”

He said the government in the next couple of years would spend `6,000 crore on the ‘milk mission’ in the state with the help of National Dairy Development Board.

“In my district, Chittoor, as many as 14 lakh litres of milk is being produced every day. One lakh litres of milk is being supplied to Delhi and 40,000 litres to Kolkata. And about 3.5 lakh litres are collected by the members of the SHGs in the district. Taking Chittoor as a model, I would like to extend this milk revolution in the entire state to help about 25 lakh families,” he said.

Responding to a question by a student, the chief ministers said the government is taking all steps to fill the posts of veterinary doctors, but suggested that young doctors should not look forward for government jobs as they can set up their own clinics or hospitals considering the huge demand for veterinary doctors in rural areas.

The students urged the chief minister to take steps to upgrade more rural livestock units as veterinary dispensaries to create more veterinary doctor posts.

The chief minister also interacted with the beneficiaries of the Pashu Kranthi pathakam, who sought an increase in the subsidy amount to purchase milch animals. He also interacted with beneficiaries of Rajiv Yuva Kiranalu.
