HYDERABAD: For the first time in the state 26 women are going to discharge duties as assistant motor vehicle inspectors in the transport department in a few days from now. This is on account of the government implementing the 33 per cent reservation for women. The AP Public Service Commission has recruited 203 assistant motor vehicle inspectors, of whom 26 are women. All the recruits have been sent for training and will be posted in different places in the state by May 25. Higher officials are in the process of identifying areas where the women AMVIs can work effectively without encountering problems, says additional transport commissioner P Srinivas.According to him, 50 women AMVI posts are still vacant thanks to non- availability of qualified women. To encourage women take up the job and to implement the rule of reservation more earnestly, he says, the government has relaxed the eligibility criterion of a heavy motor vehicle driving licence and made possession of a light motor vehicle driving licence with two years experience enough for applying for AMVI post. Though some women candidates have licence to drive LMVs, nearly all of them do not have the requisite two years’ experience but have, at the most, one year’s experience. There is, however, no relaxation in the mandatory education qualification. The candidates, whether men or women, should hold a degree in mechanical or automobile engineering or a diploma in automobile engineering.Srinivas says 250 transport constable posts are vacant but due to technical problem the department is finding it difficult to fill the posts.
