Stars behind the camera of Sholay - Part 2
Note some of the experts behind the camera who made 'Sholay' what it is still today

It’s true there a many more people who were involved with Sholay who are not mentioned below. An actual account of a those who worked on the legendary movie would spill over pages. Nonetheless, continuing from yesterday, take a look at some more of the technicians working behind the camera for Sholay

Lyricist: Anand Bakshi

His original intention was to be a playback singer and not a lyricist. Anand Bakshi wanted to be a part of Bollywood forever but his family was against it. It was a long period of struggle before he got his first entry into Bollywood with Bada Aadmi in 1961 but he hit the success ladder with Milan post which the offers never ceased. He wrote the lyrics for some great movies before he got Sholay which include Khilona, Kati Patang but his favourite was Amar Prem. He has even given lyrics for popular films like Amar Akbar Anthony, Ek Duuje Ke Liye, Taal, Dil To Pagal Hai, Pardes etc.

Film Editing: M.S. Shinde

In spite of being a blockbuster and containing some of the best performances on screen, Sholay got only one Filmfare award. But no one would even guess that it would be for the editing of the film. M.S. Shinde received his first Filmfare Award for best editing. He had edited 300,000 feet of film into 20,000 feet of theatrical release. After the censors mandated cuts, the film was 18,000 feet and ran for 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Art Direction: Ram Yedekar

Besides being the Art director he also gave his contribution in the production designs for Sholay. Ram Yedekar has done art directions for some blockbuster movies before he began work on Sholay which includes Dev Anand’s Guide and Manchali. Although, he had about 24 movies to his credit it included some really interesting films like Shalimar, Dostana, Ben Kingsley’s Gandhi, etc. He had won the Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards for Best Art Direction for Sholay.

Playback Singers: Kishore Kumar/ RD Burman/Lata Mageshkar/ Maanadey

Kishore Kumar sang most of the songs in Sholay. In his career span, Kishore Kumar has given his voice for over 699 movies. The legendary singer was a part of every aspect of filmmaking; he acts, sings, composes, directs, and produces need we say any more. RD Burman sang the song 'Mehbooba Mehbooba' which was filmed on Helen. While Lata Mageshkar sang 'Haan Jab Tak Hai Jaan' and 'Holi ke Din' with Kishore Kumar. Apparently, the two have sung about 327 songs together. The popular song 'Yeh Dosti' has Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar at the helm of things.

Costume: Stephen D’souza

For a very long time, costume designers and 'dresswalas' were not given their due for their contribution in films. But no one could deny the importance they had in every film. Sholay which created a village scene including dacoits and prisoner looks had Stephen D’Souza at the helm of things. Before which he had been in charge of costumes for Hema Mailini's Seeta Aur Geeta .
