Chennai: DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi once again reiterated his wish to promote his younger son MK Stalin as his successor on Friday. Responding to a recent survey by a Tamil magazine portraying Stalin as the most preferred leader to lead the party, Karunanidhi wondered whether he could deny "such a pride" to his son.

On the succession topic being brought up in the general council of the party, Karunanidhi explained it to be a lengthy process wherein elected representatives of the party will choose the leader. "It will take at-least a year from now," he observed.

When a scribe pointed out that the survey had some considerable number of persons voting for Karunanidhi to retire from politics, he quipped "not just the survey even both my wives tell me to retire".

Reacting to Union Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal holding A Raja responsible for 2G spectrum allocation, he strongly refuted the allegation and wondered why Sibal had retracted his earlier statement of the practice of first-cum-first serve model being implemented during the BJP regime in 2003 for spectrum allocation.

"The BJP minister who erred in that capacity too deserves punishment," Karunanidhi said.

Meanwhile, Karunanidhi chose not to respond to the question on BJP's demand that Union Home Minister P Chidambaram should step down.

On the party's general council's mood on leaving Congress alliance, Karunanidhi maintained that there was no specific demand in this connection.

"The Centre led by Congress had failed Tamil Nadu on scores of issues, including safeguarding Lankan Tamils, and protecting fishermen from the State. I explained to those who raised this as an issue that the party will have to align only with progressive, and non-religious parties for the Lok Sabha elections," he said.

"If such a party approaches us, then we will consider it through our political wing," he added.
