CHENNAI: The Sri Ramachandra University would now make available of the high resolution confocal microscope, which its Central Research Facility had acquired recently, for use by researchers of other universities and research institutions as well. Pro Chancellor (research) of the University, Dr S P Thyagarajan, announced this at the a seminar come workshop on ‘Applications of Confocal Microscopy’ at the university on Monday.Giving details, Dr Thyagarajan said that the confocal microscope with high resolution optical images and 3D reconstruction went a long way in helping high end research on cancer, stem cells, the eyes and parasitology. The microscope, he said, was a powerful research tool and had the potential applications in multiple disciplines of biological and basic medical sciences.Dr J Sathyanarayana Murthy, Vice Chancellor, said that doctors increasingly relied on the 3D reconstruction of images for accurate diagnosis and correct treatment of diseases. Dr K V Somasundaram, Dean of Faculties, outlined the technology’s contribution to patient care and research. Dr Sarah Kuruvilla, Head, Pathology Department, said the facility was available in only a few medical universities in the country. Professor T S Lokeswari, Head, Biotechnology Department, also spoke.
