CHENNAI: There seems to be no let up in the spate of fire accidents this summer, as a major blaze swept through the godown of a cellphone component manufacturing unit at Sriperumbudur in Kancheepuram district on Thursday. As huge trails of thick smoke filled the sky, the flow of traffic was affected on the Chennai-Bangalore Highway.Around 11 am, employees of Perlos Telecommunications and Electronic Components India Pvt Ltd, one of the tier one suppliers to Nokia, located inside the Nokia SEZ Park at Sriperumbudur, saw huge smoke and flames coming out of their godown.“A total of seven companies are located inside the Nokia SEZ, which is an assembling plant,” S Senthil Kumaran, fire officer, Sriperumbudur, told Express. The panels required for the mobile phones were manufactured at ‘Perlos’ by moulding plastic granules and painting them. The godown, located about 300 feet away from the main production area, stored plastic waste, new and empty paint cans and thinners in one section and bags of plastic granules on the other. It was the plastic wastes section that caught fire and the company’s deputy manager (safety) Vivek called the fire control room, he said.Five fire tenders from Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram, Perumbakkam, Maraimalai Nagar and Ambattur and another vehicle from the nearby Hyundai car company rushed to the spot. All the eight entry doors of the godown had automatic shutters and the firemen had to break the locks to gain access. It took more than two hours and huge quantities of foam for the 50 fire-fighters, led by Senthil Kumaran, to douse the flames. “We managed to save bags of plastic granules,” the fire officer said adding that there were no casualties or injuries.Preliminary investigation showed that the fire could have been caused by an electrical short-circuit in the two split air-conditioners located in the plastic wastes storage area, he said. The Sriperumbudur police, who assisted the firemen in the operations, have registered a case.
