Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) would mark its centenary mission next month by launching a French-built SPOT6 satellite aboard the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLVC21) from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
When the 720 kg SPOT6 built by ASTRIUM SAS takes off in September it would be the heaviest satellite launch by the ISRO so far. “It is a remote sensing satellite and the launch date has been slotted for somewhere in the 2nd week of September,” confirmed D P Karnik, ISRO spokesperson.
SPOT, which if translated from French means System for Earth Observation, is designed to explore resources and forecast phenomena by studying oceanography and climatology.
Karnik also informed Express that the next planned launch was of the GSAT-10. It is scheduled for two weeks after the launch of SPOT6. The GSAT-10, a communication satellite, would replace the INSAT-2E and INSAT-3B satellite besides creating additional capacity for DTH like applications. “It will be launched by the European space consortium Arianespace,” he said. GSAT-10 has 30 transponders and weighs 3,400 kg and has been developed at a cost of Rs 735 crore.
Other recent achievements of ISRO would include the images from ISRO’s OCEANSAT-2 that helped NASA researchers to determine the melting of ice in Greenland.
“The fundamental details were provided by images from OCEANSAT2. This coupled with other information helped NASA point out the ice melt,” the ISRO spokesperson said.
