Lucknow: Allegedly upset over being insulted by the police, a 24-year-old specially-abled man from Shitalapur Khesraha village of Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district set himself ablaze and succumbed to 90% burn injuries at Gorakhpur Medical College on Tuesday morning.
The victim's family alleged he was upset after being insulted and beaten up by a cop following a tiff with a woman living in his neighbourhood.
The deceased, Jagarnath Upadhyay, was called to the police station after a spat on Monday morning with the woman, where he was insulted by the inspector and hit with shoes, alleged his brother Amarnath. Jagarnath later set himself on fire and was rushed to district hospital from where he was referred to Gorakhpur Medical College.
"There was an issue of my brother Jagarnath with a woman residing in the neighbourhood and she had filed a complaint in the police station regarding this," said Amarnath. "My brother was called to the police station and insulted, he was even hit with a shoe by a police inspector. After this he returned home and set himself ablaze."
However, the police denied the allegations and said even though Jagarnath was called to the police station, he was not hit with shoes. An inquiry in the case has been ordered.
“The entire incident is being probed and if the allegations of being beaten up will be found true then strict action will be taken against the guilty,” said Superintendent of Police Rohit Singh Sajwan.
