Paris: When Lukas Rasol, ranked 100th last year, was up against two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal at the Championships, no one gave the Czech a chance to upstage the Spaniard on the green turf, but he did. Today at the French Open, 188 ranked India's Somdev Devvarman will clash with Roger Federer in the second round of French Open.
To expect the 27-year-old Devvaraman to do a Rasol would be highly far-fetched, but to see a Indian tennis player go against one of the greats of the game in a Grand slam will be a proud moment. The match which was scheduled for Tuesday was shifted to Wednesday due to rain.
Devvarman had sailed into the second round of the men's singles with a straight-set win over Daniel Munoz-De La Nava of Spain while Federer eased past Spanish qualifier Pablo Carreno Busta 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the second round.
In their only previous meeting at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in February, 2011, the World No.3 as expectedly had bulldozed past the Indian 6-3, 6-3.
