CHENNAI: A six-member gang was arrested after it allegedly demanded ‘kanduvatti’ from a vendor and threatened him with dire consequences if he failed to pay up, at Virugambakkam on Monday.S Saravanan (38), who runs a plantain leaf shop on V P Akilan Street, approached the police on August 13, claiming that he borrowed `10,000 from Chinnadurai, a usurer, for business purposes on June 25. Chinnadurai deducted `1,200 as interest and gave him the remaining amount at the time. For the last two months he paid `1,200 as interest, but could not meet the payment after that due to paucity of funds. On August 2, Chinnadurai, accompanied by his gang members Pechimuthu and Karuppusamy, met him and demanded `17,000.  Further, they said that since he had defaulted on interest of `1,200, he must pay interest for that amount, Saravanan alleged.Claiming that the gang continuously harassed him, he said Chinnadurai, Pechimuthu, Karuppusamy, Vellaidurai, another Chinnadurai and Narayanan came to his shop on Monday and refused to allow him to go out unless he paid `17,000.Baded on the plaint, the Virugambakkam police filed a case against them under sections 147, 341, 342, 506(2) and TN Prohibition Interest Act, 2003, and arrested them.
