THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: AICC spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi has once again landed the state Congress in politically troubled waters by appearing as a counsel for endosulfan manufacturers in the Supreme Court on Friday, the same day UDF MPs from the state presented a memorandum to the Prime Minister seeking his intervention in ensuring a total ban on the deadly pesticide in the country.It is for the second time that Singhvi’s professional commitments have clashed with the interests of the Congress.He had embarassed the state leadership of the party when he took up the case of tainted lottery kings while his party state unit was going tom-tom against the then LDF Govt on the lottery scam. His duties as AICC spokesperson was temporarily stripped off then, after the state unit took a public stance and lodged a complaint with the party high command.KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said on Friday that Singhvi’s appearance for the endosulfan company was improper and that he would take up the matter at the appropriate level, apart from personally lodging his protest with the latter.“As a lawyer, he can perform according to his brief.But he is the official spokesperson of AICC. When the state Congress has taken a strong stance for a total ban on endosulfan, it is improper for him to appear for the company”, he said.Senior Cong leader V M Sudheeran demanded Singhvi’s removal as AICC spokesperson.“He cannot act as the spokesperson of both the Congress and the endosulfan company,’’ he said.Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan said that Singhvi’s act once again exposed the double standards of the Congress, as in the case of the lottery issue.
