'Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padhi' starring Boman Irani and debutant actress Farah Khan is directed by Bela Bhansali Sehgal. Farah, a choreographer-turned-director, and now actress, feels that acting is something you have to give your best and living an actor life is not easy. Actor Boman Irani said 'Shirin Farhad ki Toh Nikal Padhi' is a fun comedy which will be loved by youngsters. We caught up with Farah and Boman recently. Here's what they said in an interview with IBNLive.
Choreographer-turned-director and now an actress, what’s making you play so many roles Farah?
Farah: Well it was a long journey but all went good and it was fun to do different things, I enjoyed every moment of working with Boman Irani.
How was it for both of you to play an 80's couple on screen and to bring back the old charm?
Boman: What's so old about both of us? We are pioneers. We just tried to relate and bring back the sweet love stories, the comedies and the energy of 80's which we are missing nowadays. We didn't tone the movie intentionally like that, it was all natural and if people think that it is a sex comedy then let me tell you it is not, there is a lot of sweetness and a lot of innocence in the movie which you will be really surprised to see. I must say there is a towel sequence in the movie which is later spoiled by Farah as it will be a face towel scene but then it is a very sweet little moment and a good humor, a comic moment. So, we didn't want to make a 70's love story, it just came to shape in that way.
How was your experience to work with debutant Farah?
Boman: It was the best part of the movie that we worked together, it was my dream that one day I will work with Farah Khan and it'll be enjoyable and finally when I did, it was really good.
And for you Farah?
Farah: It was the best part of making a movie like this which needs a lot of chemistry. I couldn't stand there if there would not be Boman opposite to me. We are very good friends, we know each other from a long period of time, we worked together in ‘Main Hoon Na’ as well, I know his wife, his kids, I attended his wedding and all family functions, so it was comfortable working with Boman as Farhad because working with a person with whom you are not comfortable is not easy, you can't give your best.
How did you carried yourself in the movie your own?
Farah: I don't know how I carried myself but will know this on Friday, but I would not do a movie in which I had to play a role of mother or grandmother.
But anyway, Boman is an actor and I am not, and I am doing this as a one off so if I don't get abuse for it then I'll be happy.
We just heard that it is your first and last movie, is it true?
Farah: Yes this is true; I just want to complete it once because acting is not my cup of tea.
Tell me something about the movie which will make people to love it.
Farah: I think everyone has loved the trailers and the promos and I think that's really connected with the audience. As for me, people are finding it refreshing and we are not trying to look over glamorous or cover a weight, we are looking real and acting naturally.
Boman: I tell you what is surprising, it is a movie of a Middle East couple or whatever you call it, it is the youngsters who are reacting very strongly to the movie, the dialogues in the trailer, the dances which is the most happening thing, it is not a college romance, I think it is refreshing, it is something you haven't seen before, it is a one off movie and this kind of tasking is also a one off so that is also the USP of the film.
What was the initial reaction of both of you when the movie was offered?
Farah: Boman was fainted apparently, ambulance was called when he got to know that he is the hero, when they told him that Farah is working opposite to you, and then he stood up again. And when it comes to me, I thought that everybody is pulling my leg, like how can anybody ask me to act. For one hour Bela continued to convince me saying 'I wrote the script for you only'.
How do you relate the movie character with your real life?
Farah: It's not playing myself, it's a character I am not familiar with, I not had that kind of life, so it is totally different from my real life.
So what did you take up to do the role?
Farah: There were 2-3 factors. My husband encouraged me to do it, Boman was going to be the hero and I thought that it'll be fun to do a role like this. Then I thought, why not, who gets a chance like this, you know it's one life and if you are really getting a chance to do this and someone is really willing you to do this role and really want to make this movie and being so brave about putting a film like this together then why should I not do it?
I was afraid that people will laugh at me, but afterwards I agreed.
I totally ignored the cameras, the whole setup; I just thought that there is nothing, so I used to go to the shooting setup, I used to give my best two takes and hope those takes were good.
Boman: I think she gave her best, genuinely her starting two takes were the best. I think you should not give your best in long shots because you look like a peanut in the movie.
We both invested a lot of time with each other on and off the screen, We knew each other from a long time and we have a great level of trust on each other and to me that reflects on screen in abundance, I think everybody can see it properly, whatever I say to her, she never takes it in a negative way, I give her a one liner and she replies in a one liner and everything will go smooth and we'll be happy, and I believe that creating something from nothing is a creativity and we both feel happy whenever we do it.
Farah: Actors take offense when a suggestion is made by anyone else but we are very good friends so we never takes each other in a wrong way. And if I talk about the character, if Shirin is bad then Farhad is automatically going to be bad. You know it's a jodi, if one is good, the other one had to be also like that, then only something will come out which you all call chemistry.
Boman how do you rate Farah as an actor?
Boman: I'll be very disappointed with Farah if a good role comes along and she denies that role. We are not meant for designing things, we should accept everything politely whatever comes along the way.
Did it ever get embarrassing shooting for 'SFKTNP'?
Boman: Nothing was embarrassing, it was just one day when the towel sequence was there, Farah's entire family, even maids came on set to see her acting in that scene.
Farah: They are totally opposite to each other. Farhad is completely different, he has a dominating mother and he is the dominating as well but at home I am the judge, they are very different.
