COIMBATORE: Five per cent seats of the sanctioned students’ intake in undergraduate degree and diploma (both UG and PG) courses in each technical institution would be reserved for such students, the AICTE has mandated. However, AICTE Member Secretary K P Isaac said: “The beneficiaries would be exempted from paying the tuition fees alone. Admission for these five per cent seats would be done by State Admission authorities by drawing up a separate inter-se merit list.”In Tamil Nadu, the Anna University’s TN Engineering Admissions would be the agency for conducting the single window admissions. The AICTE was planning to make this scheme mandatory last year itself, but by the time the idea was conceived most States had completed their admission process.Anna University Vice Chancellor P Mannar Jawahar said a separate counselling will be conducted for students applying under the Tuition Fee Waiver (TFW) scheme just like the sports quota or physically disabled quota counselling is done. “Those who fail to get the seat under the TFW scheme, can be allowed to participate in the general counselling.” However, K Paramasivam, president, Association of Management of Coimbatore Anna University Affiliated Colleges opposed the move. “Already, many private engineering colleges in the State are struggling with lots of seats lying vacant. In this situation, it was not possible for the colleges to fill these five per cent seats under TFW Scheme. We have written to AICTE and the State government asking them to reconsider this decision.”
