Security forces unearth land mines in Kondagaon district

The security forces on Friday recovered six Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and two pipe-bombs planted under a road in the Maoist-hit Kondagaon district of Chhattisgarh.

"The recovery was made from the forested stretch under Bayanar police station limits by a joint group of local police, QRT (quick response team) and CAF (Chhattisgarh Armed Force)," Kondagaon Additional Superintendent of Police Surjit Atri told PTI over phone.

Following the information that Naxals were observing 'martyrdom week' to commemorate their slain cadres in the region, a combing operation was undertaken from Kondagaon, 300 kms from the state capital Raipur, yesterday.

While heading towards Bayanar forest, the security forces received a tip-off that land mines were planted under the Bayanar police station road. The Bomb Disposal Squad recovered six IED-tiffin bombs weighing around 4 kg each and two pipe bombs weighing six kg each, enough to blow up any heavy vehicle, the ASP said.

Six detonators and 200 mtr wire were also recovered from the spot. "Timely discovery averted a major incident," ASP Atri said.
