THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Landscapes at their scenic best loom large in ‘Hinterland Hues’, Prabha Vasavi’s exhibition of paintings going on at Leaf Art Gallery, Nanthancode. As the title suggests, most of the works capture vivid frames of the idyllic countrysides and the vibrancy of village life. Though a city dweller she says she has never felt the urge to capture urban frames. “I am from Banglore, but the city has never inspired me. More than the sights of the city I love to portray the serene and scenic nature,” she says. Prabha says most of the works were done during her travels and each landscape which has caught her fancy had something unique in it. She also has typical Kerala scenes in her collection. “These were done when we visited Guruvayoor and Kodanadu,” she says pointing to a work that has playful jumbos in typical Kerala landscape.Prabha says next to nature Indian village life is her favourite subject.  There are paintings showcasing typical Rajasthani life complete with lehanga clad women and camel carts. “I do travel a lot. Most of my paintings are different locations near Andhra. “I do the basic sketch while at the place and complete it after coming home,” she says.  There are also paintings of lord Krishna and Shiva. The exhibition also features a couple of pencil sketches and colour charcoals. Born in Andhra Pradesh, Prabha is from the family of Chilakamarti Lakshmi Narasimham, poet, social reformer and freedom fighter. She moved to Orissa later on and has travelled all over India.  A post graduate in Hindi Prabha says she always wanted to be an artist and started off with pencil sketches at a very young age. “The pencil sketches on display were done long time back. All the works here had been done during the past 10 to 15 years. Sometimes I complete a painting in a week’s time, but depending on the work it can go up to two or three months ,”she says. She says she simply fell in love with colours and had no training when she started. “Later I attended a short term course in oil painting from an artist who had learned the art from Chitrakala Parishad. It happened ten years ago immediately after my marriage,” she says.
