Excise Minister K Babu has said that the state government is considering the setting up of a cultural centre in the name of Jnanpith award winner G Sankara Kurup, that would be on par with international standards.
He was inaugurating the drama fest as part of Lavanyam 2012, the seven-day Onam celebrations organised by the district administration and Tourism Promotion Council.
The centre will be set up on the land that the government has already allotted for the purpose. The venue will host various cultural activities and the government aims to introduce the first cultural village in the state through the project.
“Kerala has a rich theatre tradition. The government aims to give importance to theatre taking into account the new changes in the field,” he said.
An international film festival will be screened here by the district administration with the help of the government in December as part of promoting the cultural arena.
Actor Revathi, who was also present, said that the government should take initiatives to set up a centre for theatre here that was on par with international standards.
Various theatre groups, including KPAC, will take part in the drama fest at Durbar Hall ground. The fest will be on till August 31.
Noted actors Shanthakumari, Zero Babu, Thoppil Anto, Paravoor George and Maradu Joseph were honoured.
