New Delhi: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt—facing 6-years imprisonment under Arms Act is not going to file an appeal in the Supreme Court for the time being.
Dutt’s lawyer told CNN-IBN that the application would be filed sometime next week.
Meanwhile his sister and Congress MP Priya Dutt is busy finalizing the details of the bail application with the lawyers. Priya Dutt arrived in Delhi a day before and met Congress President Sonia Gandhi to discuss the issue.
Legal experts say there might be a glimmer of hope for Sanjay, as the apex court might grant him bail as an interim measure. The fact that he was convicted only under the Arms Act and not TADA is likely to go in his favour.
Also, the actor has already been on bail for the past 11-years in the case; and he has never misused any of the bail conditions imposed by the court. However, the Supreme Court's decision could also depend on the CBI's stand, which may turn the tide against him.
Priya Dutt told CNN-IBN, “As Sanjay’s sister and as his family, our main focus today is to see that what we can do to get him relief.”
On Friday morning, Sonia Gandhi convened a meeting to discuss the issue at 10 Janpath. The meeting was attended by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and his MoS, Sriprakash Jaiswal.
Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said, “Sunil Dutt epitomizes the principles of the Congress, his daughter is a Congress MP and we must extend support to Sanjay Dutt.”
Experts believe that Dutt has several legal options.
